This is the most common statement and sentiment that I hear from the Doctors, especially in the Chiropractic world. I get told that the reimbursement is to low, the fee schedules keep dropping, the denials are to high, the amount of time invested is not worth the amount that I get back.
Have you felt this way? Do you feel like you are playing the Insurance game? They tell you what you can and cannot do as a Doctor?
Well you are not fully wrong, there is what I like to call the "Insurance dance". You do have to know what you are doing. You do have to know "their" game and there are rules that have to be followed to get what you deserve as the Doctor.
However, is cash really the route to go? I have been playing this dance and learning their rules and playing their games for 2 decades now. I have ran the numbers, evaluated the cash prices verses the Insurance reimbursement rates. Worked with the Patients and listened to why they choose "us" our "Practice".
The truth is, the Patient pays their premium, they at this time are still willing and even wanting to pay more than your "time of service" cash rates to have their Insurance processed, even if it is just applied toward their deductible. They are looking for Doctors and selecting who they are willing to give a try, based on if you are "in-network" or not.
Now are you doomed to accept a lower reimbursement even with the time you spend with the Patient, all because you are filing their insurance?
No, the good news, every practice I have worked for, after evaluating what procedures they were currently preforming, which ones they could incorporate, compared the Insurance fee schedules with their cash rates, improved their coding practices, cleaned the claims prior to submission, worked the A/R and appealed these CPT codes with the proper knowledge. I found money left on the table every time!
The key is knowing what you are doing and how to do it. This is where I come in. What if your revenue was to increase, your stress levels were reduced, you had more time with your Patients, your families and best of all you are making more than what you were making even after my fees?
